Joining 505 SAR Dogs
We’re always looking for dedicated individuals and dog handlers who want to serve their community through K9 search and rescue. Becoming a K9 SAR handler is a serious commitment — and one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.
New members go through a structured onboarding process to ensure both handler and dog are prepared for the demands of real K9 search and rescue operations across New Mexico’s diverse terrain.
Reach Out & Express Interest
Send us an email at info@505sardogs.org to introduce yourself, describe your background, and tell us about your dog. We’ll schedule an informal conversation to learn more about your goals and experience.
Attend a Team Training
Prospective members are invited to observe or participate in training sessions. This gives you a realistic picture of the commitment involved and allows the team to get to know you and your dog in a field setting.
Complete Membership Application
Formally apply for membership by completing our application. We’ll review your background, SAR experience (if any), and your dog’s training history and health records.
Begin Probationary Training Period
New teams enter a probationary period training alongside experienced handlers, developing foundational SAR skills and working toward evaluations. This period typically lasts several months.
Certify & Deploy
Once your team meets operational standards, you’ll complete certification evaluations and become eligible for deployment on actual SAR missions throughout New Mexico.
